WHAT ARE LIABILITY CLAIM PAYOUTS?
Liability claim payouts are payments the City has to make to those it has injured when it has failed to meet its responsibilities, or when City officials or employees directly harm– or fail to prevent avoidable harm to– residents.
MOST LIABILITY PAYOUTS ARE PAID FROM THE GENERAL FUND, NOT DEPARTMENT BUDGETS
Liability claim payouts aren’t taken out of the budgets of the individual City Department that gave rise to the liability - instead, a significant portion of them come out of the General Fund which is mainly used to fund city services and resources for Angelenos.
